How would you explain feminism to a toddler? Why do you think it matters to introduce these ideas early?
One of the most important life lessons that can be taught to a toddler is the fact that everybody in this world regardless of their gender is equal. We should teach children from early on that they should never discriminate between girls and boys. This is because it would help both girls and boys to see each other as equals from an early age and this would also convince them to treat each other with respect and kindness. This mindset will be carried on by young children to adulthood and ultimately would help to raise a generation where issues like catcalling, abuse, rape, etc. don't occur.
Sometimes families themselves don't stay true to feminism. Especially in Indian families, a child may witness the son being favoured over the daughter, a power dynamic difference between the husband and wife and even cases of domestic violence. There are movies like Animal which further promotes domestic violence. Content creators like Andrew tate and Pearl who openly talk ill of women and try to promote a patriarchal society. Thus, a child being exposed to all these forms of media can naturally develop a mindset that men is the superior gender. To prevent this, we have to teach children from a young age that women deserve to be treated with the same respect as men and that there is no "superior" gender.
While explaining the concept of feminism to them, we should keep it quite simple. We don't have to teach them about the politics of feminism and how women have quotas or reservation in certain jobs. We should stick to teaching them the core values of feminism i.e girls and boys are equally important and should get the same chances to learn, play, dream, and choose what they want to do. If boys learn this from a young age, they wouldn't have tendency of commiting gender based crimes which often occur due to the patriarchal mindset of the criminal and a natural hatred towards women. These boys would eventually grow into men who would stand up for their female counterparts instead of tearing them down or excluding them. Meanwhile, teaching girls feminism would enable them to dream big and prevent them from developing an inferiority complex. It would help both girls and boys to understand how important it is to stick to each other and routinely work together to help bring about positive changes in society instead of fighting amongst one another and bringing each other down. It's not men vs women, it has always and will always be men and women.
Another important thing is that we should always emphasise on the fact that feminism just means men and women are equals. It doesn't mean that women are better. There are certain narratives online that openly hate on men and promote misandry in the name of feminism. This is equally dangerous because it alienates young men from the word feminism and they would naturally develop an aversion to it. Young women might also feel that women are superior and might expect special treatment from men even though they shouldn't.
Therefore, we should always make it clear to children that feminism is an extremely important concept to understand and practice. From a young age, we should encourage boy-girl friendships and enable them to work with each other as a team.
