Two women from completely different generations meet at a place neither of them expected to be. What do you think they'd talk about?
Women have tried their level best to fight for their rights since ancient times. No matter how much society tried to suppress their freedom, women have always rebelled against prejudice and inequality.
One of the biggest examples can be taken from the character Draupadi in the Mahabharata. Epics aren't just passed down stories, they are an ultimate reflection of society and how humans actually feel and think. Even during the period of 400bce to 400ce, writing a character like draupadi must've drawn real inspiration from actual women who were rebellious and wanted to make a significant impact in this world rather than just doing what everyone expects them to do.
However, the difference lies in the extent of rights. Modern day women now enjoy a lot of freedom relatively and can wear what they want, marry whomever they want and pursue their career of choice. A women in the 18th or 19th century perhaps couldn't even dream of rights like these.
If a conversation were to happen between women of different generations, they would perhaps talk mostly about topics related to politics, beauty standards, fashion , regrets and most importantly their rights.
The modern day woman would talk about how political leaders now make schemes and policies that cater to women's needs (even if it's mostly just to attract women voters). The woman from the older generation let's say before the suffragate movement, would reply to her with sadness about how women are excluded from mainstream poltics. They can neither run for elections nor have the right to vote. Every political activity is mostly done in secrecy or within specific limitations.
They would also have a long conversation about beauty standards. The modern woman would complain about how in this generation being skinny isn't enough. You need to have a flat stomach and a slim waist however at the same time have curves in the right places. Cosmetic surgeries and beauty treatments are making raves and basically every woman looks the same in any fashion magazine. The women from the older generation would be grateful that cosmetic surgeries don't exist in her time but she would definitely complain about how the unachievable skinny figure which glorifies eating disorders is the beauty standard.
One of the most common thing about women from all generations is their interest in fashion. In india, the fashion in older times was a bit more conservative, traditional and lacked western touches. The current genz fashion is heavily influenced by the west and tend to be revealing which indicates the freedom and confidence of modern day women. The women from the older generation would probably judge the modern day women's clothing and call it promiscuous, which indicates their internal mysogynistic beliefs.
The last and most important topic of discussion would probably be about rights. The older generation women would be fascinated by the sheer number of rights that modern women enjoy. Right to vote, right to wear whatever they want, right to marry whomever they want, right to own property, to pursue a career without judgement, right to equal opportunities in all fields, etc. For the first time, she felt that maybe all the agitation and protests that women have been doing for centuries will finally reap the fruits of their labour. She would be happy to learn that now women from all over world have joined hands to work together and achieve significant milestones. Women's health and other issues no longer are a taboo but they are openly discussed in social media platforms. Meanwhile the modern day woman would probably thank the universe for being born in this particular generation. However, issues like workplace harassment, rape, child marriage , dowry still exist even in modern day times. Although there has been a drastic reduction from before.
Overall both women would be satisfied with their conversation about these different matters. The one thing among women that has been the same since centuries is their inner fire and thirst to prove themselves to the world that they aren't the weaker gender and can do anything and everything like any other man. No matter which generation, the 1800s or 1900s or 2000s, women have consistently rebelled against injustice and spoken up whenever necessary without completely ignoring their otherwise gentle nature.
