Why "It ends with us" deserves all the hype

WHY “IT ENDS WITH US” DESRVES ALL THE HYPE Colleen Hoover has recently become the one of the most popular authors in the world. Most of her books tend to have a very romantic but heartbreaking storyline along with mentally traumatised female leads. Her writing is most of the time quite simple and may come off as a typical cliché rom-com. However, towards the end of her novel it is revealed that her books hold a very deep and important message addressed through a light, entertaining story. She always makes sure to impart life values to the readers instead of simply telling a tale. She has written 29 novels till now, my personal favourite being “It ends with us”

I feel like most of the young teenage girls who proudly claim that they found the book “overrated” or the ones making Instagram reels, tiktoks and even youtube videos about how Ryle was the better option, missed the entire point of the book. Colleen writing Ryle in such way that still makes us not wanna completely hate him even after the things he did was, I believe completely intentional. She tried to make us understand why it is often so difficult for women to leave abusive marriages and how easy it is for us to judge those women from afar. Colleen has also highlighted the fact that how having an abusive man in the house not only hurts the wife but also permenantly breaks the child completely. Lily has most of the time allowed the things that happened in her past influence her current decisions. When Ryle first raised his hand at her, all she could think was how he was different from her father instead of breaking up with him immediately. She does the same thing when he hits her the second time and despite everything marries him. Fortunately when he crosses the line the third time, Lily decides to leave him for good even though she was pregnant with Ryle’s child. Lily being courageous enough to leave Ryle even after loving him so deeply just so her daughter could have a better future is probably one of the happiest endings I’ve ever read in a book.

But the very fact that even as readers we catch ourselves forgiving Ryle each time he hurt Lily just proves how brilliantly the book is written. So no, the book isn’t popular just because of a certain blue-eyed masterchef Atlas Corrigan. The book is popular mostly because of a vulnerable young woman in her mid 20s being able to free herself from the clutches of her terrible past and ending up with the man she was destined to be with for the rest of her life.

Quote that make me tear up sometimes: “You can stop swimming now Lily, we finally reached the shore. -Atlas Corrigan
